Tell Us About Your Break
Minecraft Monday
There has been some amazing creations being made in Minecraft EE. We are now learning how to focus our projects so that they better share our learning or understanding of a concept by having Minecraft Monday.
You need to share your Minecraft Monday Project idea with Mrs Corcoran BEFORE you start.

Ashburton Floods
Well, who would have thought? Ashburton is currently in two parts with our river bridge out of action.
Here is a recap of what has happened so far.
Here is a recap of what has happened so far.
So just how much water is that? Let's work it out.
On 28th May 2021, the Ashburton River / Hakatere was flowing at 7.5 cumecs (7,500 litres of water). Two days later this had increased to 1,542 cumecs . . . that's A LOT of water!
As the water flows down the river, the force has an effect on the environment. Think about what would have been picked up in the water as it flowed down.
Now think about what happens when this water flow meets a structure like a bridge. What affect would this have?
Now think about what happens when this water flow meets a structure like a bridge. What affect would this have?
Let's look at the bridge itself. What type of bridge is the Ashburton River bridge? What is it made of? What is it set in?
There has been a lot of discussion over the last few years about the need for a second bridge across the Ashburton River. Let's see what you think would be the best design of bridge and place for it to be.
You will work in four groups to design a bridge that will span across the Ashburton River. It needs to be able to carry various weights of vehicles and you need to think about how you can prevent damage should another weather event such as this occur again. You will also need to look at where would be the best place to put the bridge for ease of traffic flow through Ashburton both North and South.
Your group will need to present;
- a design for your bridge with details of the materials it would be made from and why you have chosen this design
- a map showing where you would place the bridge and why
- a model of the bridge made from materials that you can find in the classroom.
This text might give you some ideas.

How the World Works
Our initial questions about how the world works.
America's Cup 2021
Briar had the question . . .

|
We have watched some replays of the America's Cup to understand what Briar is asking about. The Maatauranga website has some information to help us answer this question.
When we've been watching the racing we've noticed lots of children at the Viaduct supporting Luna Rosa. Watch to find out what it's like being an Italian kid living in a whole different country. What do you think it would be like to be a Kiwi kid living in Italy?
So we found out that it is the foils and the shape of the foils that make the boats 'fly', just like a plane's wings help them to fly.
This then sparked the question . . .
How does a wings shape help a plane fly?
This then sparked the question . . .
How does a wings shape help a plane fly?
Before we can answer that, there are some things we need to know about how planes fly.
Check out these videos to get your thinking started.

Now that you know a bit about the forces involved in flight, see if you can answer these questions.
If you need to do the worksheet again click this link.
We've learnt that planes need four things (other than the pilot!) to fly.
Now we need to know how wings work to create lift. Check out these videos.

Now it's your turn . . . what is your OWN question you have about how the world works? Share them on this Padlet.
Now that you have your starting question, go to Epic! books where you will find books assigned to you related to your question. (Check out the video if you are not sure how to get to your books).

Use your Tic-Tac-Toe note taking sheet to gather information to help you answer your question.
Remember when we talked about critical thinking and chose our images to help us understand where we were working? When you are finding your information, keep re-visiting the rubric and look at what you need to focus on next to improve your critical thinking.
