Sonny gets half as many lollies as Sam.
Sam gets 18 and half of 18 is 9. Sunny got 9 lollies. Since Sam gets 18 lollies on any day and Sylvia gets a third of that, then Sylvia gets 6 lollies because 18 divided by 3 is 6. Five days is five lots of six which is thirty. Sylvia gets 30 lollies. |
Maia got 18 in two days, so 9 lollies a day.
Maia got three times as many lollies as Sam, so Sam got 3 lollies a day. Nikau got 6 (= 2 x 3) lollies per day. So over a five-day period Sonny got 5 x 6 = 30 lollies. Sam got 3 lollies a day, so he got 15 from Monday to Friday. 15 + 24 = 39. Sam needs 24 lollies on Saturday. |

What do we know?
We know that 12 people arrive and half of them are turned away. So 6 are turned away and 6 people can be seated. Pizza Place is three-quarters full (has one-quarter empty). 6 people is a quarter of a full house. So the full house is 4 times 6 = 24. Using a guess and check approach: We could guess that the smallest table seats 3. In that case the next table seats 6 and the biggest table seats 9. Since 3 + 6 + 9 = 18, our guess is a bit low. So guess 5. Then we get 10 and 15 for the other tables. Now 5 + 10 + 15 = 30 and that’s too high. So the smallest table must seat 4. That can be easily checked. Another approach is to suppose that the smallest table seats 'some'. The next table seats two lots of 'some'. Altogether, this is three lots of some. The biggest table seats three lots of 'some'. That is six lots of 'some' in total. Six lots of some is 24. So some is 4. That’s the number of people that can sit at the smallest table. |

Maths Problems - can you solve today's maths problems?
Some things we can think about before we start doing the maths.
Fish don’t have arms so the arms come from the octopuses and the mermaids. All of the creatures have two eyes and since there are 24 eyes there must be 12 creatures. Octopuses don’t have tails so there are 8 fish and mermaids. If there are 12 creatures, 8 of which are fish and mermaids, and 12 – 8 = 4 octopuses, so there are 4 octopuses. 4 octopuses contribute 4 x 8 = 32 arms. That leaves 38 – 32 = 6 arms for the mermaids. There must be 3 mermaids. So that means there are 5 fish. |

Maths Problems - can you solve today's maths problems?
There are many patterns that can be found in this problem.
Let's try a few numbers and see what we get: 13 + 31 = 44 26 + 62 = 88 47 + 74 = 121 54 + 45 = 99 68 + 86 = 154 Now we can see that if the sum of the digits in the 2-digit number is less than 10 then the sum of the reversed numbers is less than 100 (eg 27 + 72 = 99; 2 + 7 = 9 which is less than 10 so the reversed numbers is less than 100). Also all the answers are part of the 11 times table. |
I worked this out by first finding out what numbers 45 can be divided by;
1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45 - the three dogs must have one of these as their age. I then took out 15 and 45 because the ages needed to add to 15 and these numbers wouldn't work. This leaves me 1, 3, 5, and 9. I then worked out which three numbers could be added to make 15. But the ages can’t be 1, 3, 9 because 1 x 3 x 9 is not equal to 45. So one of the ages must be 5. That leaves two numbers to make 9. They must be 1 and 9. So the three ages are 1, 5, 9 which do have a sum of 15. |

Niko paid 40c more than Kaia so subtract 40c from $5.90 ($5.90 - $0.40 = $5.50).
Divide by 2 to find Kaia's share: $5.50 ÷ 2 = $2.75 Niko contributes $2.75 + $0.40 = $3.15. |

Let's say the flavours are vanilla (V), chocolate (C), strawberry (S), and boysenberry (B). We must use different flavours in each cone and the different types of ice cream are side by side in the top of the cone. Remember also that the order of the flavours doesn't matter, for example,VC = CV. These are important pieces of information. Here are the possible solutions.
VC VS VB CS CB SB There are 6 possibilities here. |
This is the solution I got. You may have the paddocks in a different order (ie the left side and right side swapped) . . . or did you get a different solution?

Marie is less than 11 and Tom is more than 5. The ages of the children are therefore 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10.
As there is a difference of 2 years between each year of birth, the ages must be 6, 8 and 10. Marie’s age = 10 (check 10 < 11); and Tom’s age = 6 (check 6 > 4); and Grace’s age = 8 (check 10 – 2 = 8 and/or 6 + 2 = 8); and Lily's age = 8 (check 8 = 8). |

Maths Problems - can you solve today's maths problems?
38 is not exactly divisible by 5 or 7.
So both 5g and 7g weights are needed. 38 – 7 = 31 38 – (2 x 7) = 24 38 – (3 x 7) = 17 are not divisible by 5. However, 38 – (4 x 7) = 10 which equals 2 x 5. So Dr Martin can use four 7g weights (28g) and two 5g weights (10g). |
$3.50 = 350 cents (100 cents in $1)
I know that Dad will have 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $1 coins to use. I know that 7 x 5 is 35 so 7 x 50c would be 350c or $3.50. So Dad pays for 15 minutes of parking 7 times 7 x 15 = ? (7 x 10) + (7 x 5) = 70 + 35 = 105 minutes 105 minutes = 1 hour and 45 minutes. 3:15 + 1:45 = 5:00. So Dad can park in the car park up until 5 pm. |
This is how I solved them - you may have had a different way but got the same answer.
